The Weeknd Review by Aris Blossom

This guy makes amazing music. If you are in to the music that takes you to outer space, well this is the guy to do it. He is an artist from Canada and collaborated with Drake, creating OVOXO. Last year (2011), The Weeknd released 3 mixtapes and most people, [myself included] slept on them. My dear friend & fellow blogger Aris Blossom put me on game about the mixtapes. After hearing the mixtapes, I knew this guy was the truth. I wanted to give the review myself, but instead, I wanted a professional to do a review on The Weeknd. Here’s what Aris had to say about the The Weeknd’s most recent mixtape “Echoes of Silence” …

“I am in no way considering myself an expert on music, however I have a very keen sense when it comes to breakout artists. One that has caught my eye with in the past year or so would be The Weeknd has been consistent with his past 2 mixtapes  (House of Balloons and Thursday) and continues to impress me with his growth in his third mixtape (Echoes of Silence).

This artist is from Canada has such a unique sound. This sound doesn’t just resonate from his strong vocals but also from his production. You can hear the strong African influence in his use of many different instruments.

We have all heard different renditions of The Late Great Michael Jackson’s song Dirty Diana, some were like “uhhhh why” while others have been enjoyable. Well The Weeknd takes this great song to a level that would make Michael Jackson himself stand up and give a standing ovation. The way he executes MJ’s signature sounds at times had me looking back at my phone like “I didn’t know I had this song on here”. Whenever I hear it now I get a few chills, keep in mind this kid is ONLY 21 YEARS OLD and has way more growth and development ahead of him.

Whenever I listen to music I relate it to different aspects of my life and this mixtape right now seems to be singing the #storyofmylife!!

Although this song has verses in French and I am more versed in Spanish I still particularly like this song. He is showing his versatility and it makes for one DARN RIGHT SEXY song!! Lol The production is crazy if you actually break down the different sounds. It is a very basic beat, but his Ethiopian heritage comes out in this one also. The lyrics are especially touching. Females sometimes forget about the male and his feelings. They need reassurance too and this song pretty much sums this up. How many of you men have just wanted “her” to give you some time to think things through? Normally when we hear that we feel it’s over…this song clearly expresses the male’s emotions about how he need time and all he wanted  her to do was UNDERSTAND THAT AND REASSURE HIM that they would make it through.

Owwwwwwwwwww OMGGGG What can I say about “Outside”??? Sheesh!! This song is so sexyyyy!!! Every man wants a freak, but NO MAN wants to think of their woman with anyone other than themselves. The Weeknd just puts it out there “I’ll let you show me his moves……..let you reminisce about what you used to do”. This man is on a mission to MAKE YOU FORGET THAT “YOUR PRIOR”. Even though he is singing you feel as if he is going through every motion of stroking her as he sings. A seductive way of saying “You gon’ learn today….ALRIGHT ALRIGHT ALRIGHT” (Kevin Hart voice) lol He is about to blow your back out so serious that you will not want to go anywhere!! That right there is what I am talking about.

The Host

This man LOVES sex! Lol Primarily when under the seduction of multiple drugs and a lot of alcohol. The musical arrangement on this song makes getting high, drinking into oblivion, and screwing someone’s brains out something you should be doing on a daily! Lol I believe that The Weeknd could cause a priest or monk smash something if listened long enough. SMH

Initiation

Another great song, basic drums combined with funky instruments, that describes a man getting to know a girl. He wants to give his heart to her but he has to test her to make sure she is worthy.
Same Old Song

If this ish doesn’t speak to me!!! We all have “that one” that seems to plague your brain and keeps popping up in your life. You are finally doig something with your life and they see YOUR GROWTH and how successful you are getting so they want you back. The person keeps saying they have changed and are ready to give it a go, but deep down you know “It’s about to be that same ole ish”. Still you entertain because of your attachment until it really hits you…YOU ARE EXACTLY THE SAME AS WHEN I LEFT YOU and you refuse to go through the same hurt a second time. All while sung in a sexy manner and not a woman bashing way.

The Fall

Yessssss Yessssss Yesssssssss!! Now that we have gotten past the “Same Old Song” and we are now ready to love someone new. Of course some of his correction: MOST of his songs could be describing a “drug trip” but we are going to assume they are about relationships! Haha In this song the way the chanting is in the background it makes you feel as if some one is igging you on…like “DO IT….FALL”. He is ready to give his heart. The erie sounds added into the production make this song just that great!!

Next

*Sigh* This song right here….relates to different aspects of my life and I am sure some of yours also. How many of you have met someone that fits everything you ever wanted, however they are so damaged that they just view you as the “NEXT” instead of everything that you want them to be? Well this song will speak volumes to your soul. There are times where we don’t know that is all that we are though of as, but The Weeknd sings about knowing and being too far involved and just embraces his role. His adlibs on this song just do something to my soul I tell ya. (in country accent) There is not one person reading this review that can say they have never felt tis way. *deep sigh*

Echoes Of Silence

Ahhhhh the typical “buddy” song!! Fellas we know you may feel this way at time and will never express it, but ladiessss he is mainly talking to us on this one. Why is that we are such masochists? Could it be that sex is too big of a part in our lives? Next to Antebellum’s song “Need You Now”, this is one of the sexiest BOOTY CALL SONGS EVER!!!!

This album is definitely one that would make most men ATTEMPT TO IMPREGNANTE someone’s daughter and make most women ALLOW IT TO HAPPEN WILLINGLY!!! Lol This mixtape along with the other three could STAY ON REPEAT!!!”
